While exploring the winding cobblestone side streets of Barcelona’s medieval Gothic Quarter, we met Ramon, the proprietor of a small leather shop who married custom-cut pieces of cord to locally produced zamak magnetic clasps. We spoke very little Spanish (no Catalan), and Ramon spoke almost no English, but we managed to have an emotionally connected and constructive conversation. We hand-gestured our way through the language barrier, and ultimately left Ramon’s shop with so much more than a stylish souvenir — we had fallen in love with the city and could now carry a piece of it back home. We were inspired by Ramon’s passion, and his craftsmanship. We set out to make bracelets that evoke the same sense of time and place ― the essence of Barcelona, of the living city that we experienced in Ramon’s shop on that warm, sunny Spanish day.
